Does economic inequality affect the parenting style chosen by parents?
What drives the way parents raise their children? Can parenting be shaped by economic incentives and constraints? In this study, the authors construct a theory of choice regarding how parents raise their children, whether through a more permissive or more authoritarian parenting style. Through multinomial logistic regressions for OECD countries, it was possible to see that children are affected by parental preferences and the socioeconomic environment. Thus, a decline in the authoritarian style is observed in industrialized countries, and a higher incidence of permissive parenting is seen in countries with low inequality.
