Do public audits influence re-elections in Brazil?
Based on a national program to combat political corruption, which conducted public audits in Brazilian municipalities randomly, researchers evaluated the impact of disclosing information about corrupt acts on electoral results in Brazil. To do this, the research compared the results of municipal elections where public audits occurred before the 2004 elections with those where public audits occurred after that election. This allowed researchers to observe whether the availability of information about political corruption influences voters' decisions, affecting vote share or chances of reelection. The authors state that disclosing information about corrupt acts decreases the probability of a mayor being re-elected.

Do audits help fight corruption in Brazil?
Political corruption is a relevant topic mainly because it hinders economic development and causes damage to the country. Corrupt acts divert public funds, undermine the credibility of institutions, and weaken democracy as a whole, being the subject of study by various researchers seeking its reduction. In this text, economists analyze a pioneering program to combat political corruption in Brazilian municipalities, highlighting the positive impacts resulting from conducting random public audits. The authors demonstrate that the program not only helped to identify and prosecute corrupt politicians, but also reduced corrupt practices in the audited municipalities.
