"A social network just for audio?" You've probably seen many people asking this question in the last week when talking about Clubhouse, and in the end, you asked yourself the same question. But where did this new app come from, and what is its purpose?
Rohan Seth and Paul Davidson created the audio-focused social network in April 2020, and since Elon Musk, the world's richest man, created an account and opened his forum, the social network has remained a trending topic. Besides Elon Musk, names like Oprah Winfrey, Ashton Kutcher, Camila Pitanga, and Gregório Duvivier are already present on the social network.
There you can find people to talk to about a wide variety of subjects, from economics with Nath Finanças to a chat about Big Brother Brazil. At first glance you might think that the forums function like a conversation at a bar table, and that might be true, but depending on the room you need to ask the moderator for permission to speak. Many rooms can function as a kind of lecture, in which only the moderators speak.

How do I get into the Clubhouse?

The social network was created with a touch of exclusivity: for now, it's only available to iPhone users, and creating an account requires an invitation. It's been a long time since the launch of a social network that only allowed invited users to join—remember the early days of Orkut?
Each Clubhouse user is entitled to send two invitations from the app, which ended up creating a "market" around the social network. A kind of e-commerce emerged, with people starting to sell invitations, prices ranging from R$150,00 to R$279,00.
Another way to join the social network is to download the app and join a kind of waiting list. The app cross-references your contact list, Twitter, or Instagram, and if any of your contacts are on Clubhouse, you receive an invitation without that person losing one of the two invitations each account entitles them to.
