The IDP Internationalization Program in Silicon Valley is an initiative that allows students to experience firsthand the technological transformations shaping the future of society.
The immersion program includes visits to leading institutions such as Stanford University, Tools For Humanity, a technology company founded by Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), and disruptive startups. In addition to direct contact with leaders and experts, participants have the opportunity to reflect on how these innovations impact their research areas and professional practice.
Below, we have compiled the main excerpts from the reports produced by the students who participated in the 2024 edition.
Technology, identity and fundamental rights
During a visit to Tools For Humanity, the company responsible for the World ID project, the students discussed the legal challenges of identity verification based on iris biometrics.
The company develops solutions to ensure that online users remain human in an increasingly automated world.
One highlight was the controversy surrounding cryptocurrency payments for biometric data collection, which was suspended by the ANPD (Brazilian National Data Protection Authority) for violating the principle of free consent in the LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law).
The experience highlighted the dilemmas between innovation, privacy, and personality rights in the digital context.
“As a technology professional, seeing the construction of a service based not only on present needs, but also anticipating future demands, has prompted important reflections on how Brazil, and even the legal field, should promote the development of more innovative solutions.” – Daniela Martins.
The AI revolution and the new profile of the lawyer.
Visits to offices and companies in Silicon Valley have shown how Artificial Intelligence is transforming legal practice.
Tools like Copilot already automate repetitive tasks and allow for predictions in litigation. This requires lawyers to go beyond traditional legal technique, acting as strategic consultants with knowledge in business, economics, and technology.
The Brazilian model, still focused on the punctual resolution of conflicts, needs to evolve to keep up with this new market demand. These are innovations that directly impact students' experiences in the professional and academic spheres, since research seeks to understand and study these phenomena.
Democracy and participation in the 21st century
At Stanford University's Deliberative Democracy Lab, students learned about the "deliberative polling" methodology, which seeks to reduce polarization through structured and informed discussions.
This approach can be adapted to the Brazilian context, promoting more legitimate and effective advocacy campaigns.
In this scenario, the role of the government relations professional becomes that of a mediator in social dialogue, fostering more empathetic and democratic public decisions.
Digital inclusion and social protection on platforms
The visit to Triider, a Brazilian startup based in Silicon Valley, opened up a space for discussion about the social security inclusion of digital platform workers.
The company stands out for its good practices in selecting and supporting service providers, but there are still gaps in protecting these professionals.
The debate reinforces the urgency of public policies that integrate technological innovation with legal certainty and social inclusion.
Experience in Silicon Valley shows that the boundary between technology, law, and public policy is becoming increasingly blurred.
Our students' accounts highlight the importance of preparing professionals not only to understand these transformations, but also to lead them in an ethical, strategic, and socially responsible manner.
