The group aims to discuss and conduct coordinated studies that can assess the impacts resulting from changes in the economic and social structure of a country, state, or region. These changes may or may not be caused by alterations in legislation, regulations, fiscal policies, social programs, and other public policies implemented by the government at its different levels. In doing so, it seeks to contribute to the academic literature in the field of economics through the production of scientific articles and to public debate on the topics presented. Furthermore, the group will organize a series of free online publications – the Empirical Economics Bulletin – with wide dissemination, containing concise technical opinions on current issues in these topics, in order to spread knowledge and reach the largest possible audience.
Research lines:
– Economy, Institutions and Development: Public resources are scarce, and decisions about how to use them should be based on an understanding of how well they can be used.
Public programs and policies produce the desired results. This is precisely the objective of sub-line 1: to analyze and understand the main determinants of economic development, as well as the role of the State in this process.
– Law and Economics: The second sub-area seeks to apply economic analysis and reasoning to evaluate laws and other forms of regulation (contracts, jurisprudence, norms, etc.). – Finance: The third sub-area seeks to utilize the most recent theories and applications in the field of credit, monetary and interest rate policies, as well as the tools and instruments commonly used in financial management, project evaluation, pricing and forecasting of asset volatility.
– Regulation and Competition: The fourth sub-area is part of the debate regarding the regulatory state and promoter of economic development in the context of a free market economy. This area seeks to utilize a set of theoretical and practical knowledge that allows for an understanding of the logic behind state intervention through regulation, as well as reflection on its consequences for the behavior of economic agents.
