The research group “Constitutional History of Republican Brazil: institutions, concepts and experiences” (HCBR) aims to foster reflection, debate and the production of academic knowledge about the Brazilian constitutional dimension from a historical perspective. To this end, it intends to study not only normative texts, but also legal-constitutional thought, institutions, constituent processes, and demands for rights related to the constitution and constitutionalism during the Brazilian Republic.
HCBR intends to develop its activities through the following lines of research:
(a) Constituent processes and dynamics of constitutional change (b) Historical trajectory of constitutional review in the Brazilian Republic
(c) Discourse and practice of rights in Brazilian constitutionalism (d) Authoritarianism and the constitution in the republican experience
HCBR's activities will be carried out through the following axes:
(I) Study and discussion of texts: holding bi-weekly meetings to discuss texts indicated in a semester-long reading schedule. The texts will be presented by a student rapporteur, followed by debates and explanations from the professor.
(I) Research: conducting academic research and producing texts, at the undergraduate (scientific initiation and final course project) and postgraduate (final course project) levels. (III) Translating academic texts relevant to the field of constitutional history.
