IDP restarted its undergraduate activities remotely this Monday (March 30th). This emergency measure aims to ensure that students are not harmed by the isolation imposed by the government to contain the spread of the new coronavirus. coronavirusAccording to the institution, the expectation is that postgraduate specialization courses and master's programs will also be resumed. Online classes are being taught through the Canvas platform, widely used by leading institutions around the world, such as Harvard in the USA and Oxford in the UK.
The coordinator of the undergraduate law course, Marcelo Proença, explains that the changes were implemented quickly to avoid harming the students. “In 15 days, we mobilized a team of 50 employees to acquire equipment, provide training, and contact the 1.100 students to train them on the system. We mounted a war-like operation. We acquired a system used in the best educational institutions, Canvas. It interfaces with Zoom (a teleconferencing application). The professors teach classes at the times that the in-person classes would have been,” he says.
According to Proença, on the first day of operation, the institution had 18 virtual classrooms. “The teachers who didn't have equipment received it. We put it online and it worked. At one point, we had 18 virtual classrooms functioning. Each one with a teacher giving a lesson and a professional ready to ensure the smooth operation of the transmission.”
According to the coordinator, it is essential to maintain activities so that students are not harmed. He believes that the measure will be beneficial for the institution, since the new system can also be used after the crisis. "From an academic point of view, we don't lose the semester."
"It doesn't cause interruptions that would harm the research. We implemented something that will be used from now on. We have a state-of-the-art system. We will return to our in-person classes when authorized, but we have gained a new tool. This is important for the students, from a human point of view. They can have normalcy in this difficult time, learning, participating, seeing the teachers."
During the week, IDP will also promote a series of new activities for students, such as clubs, meditation classes, and courses taught by professors from other countries. Marcelo also explains that the goal is to make the academic environment more attractive and promote student engagement, even remotely. “We want to make the academic environment more dynamic.
We created specific research groups on Covid-19. We have a group on contemporary issues in constitutional law with European professors. In parallel, there were initiatives to make the academic environment more lively,” he adds.
