The course was authorized by the Ministry of Education – MEC on December 6th. In the course, the doctoral student will engage with the study of constitutional principles and their repercussions in other branches of Law, including research on fundamental rights, constitutional process and jurisdiction, proposing new interpretations on various areas of Law in light of constitutional principles.
According to the Doctor and Coordinator, João Bachur, the program is a major step in the academic life of a lawyer. “The Doctorate is very important because it allows for a very high level of academic qualification and opens doors to new professional paths. Furthermore, it also creates networking opportunities within the legal world for all legal professionals, regardless of their profession,” explains the Coordinator.
The program is coming with an innovative format. “Firstly, the pedagogical concept: at IDP we seek to understand and investigate the different branches of law starting from the structuring role of constitutional law, always with the concern of contributing to the solution of concrete problems in the country. Secondly, the methodology: we use the weekend format, with classes concentrated in bi-weekly meetings on Fridays and Saturdays. This allows professionals to reconcile their professional practice with their academic career,” he explains.
“Thirdly, our faculty includes professors with outstanding academic profiles and experience as ministers of superior courts, judges, prosecutors, and renowned lawyers, among them authors of reference works. All of this allows for very high-level debates in the classroom. Fourthly, internationalization. IDP regularly offers intensive courses abroad, giving doctoral students who are professionally active the opportunity to experience international academic debate intensively,” concludes the professor.
The IDP PhD program will feature several highly qualified professors throughout its duration, including the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court and Doctor of Constitutional Law, Gilmar Mendes; the Minister of the Superior Court of Justice and Doctor of Law, Paulo Sanseverino; the Doctor of Law and Government Manager at CADE, Laura Schertel; the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic and Doctor of Law, Paulo Gonet Branco; and the Doctor of Law and Minister of the Supreme Court of Justice, Ricardo Cueva.
Applications for the PhD program will be available starting February 17th, followed by an interview from February 20th to 23rd, and finally, classes beginning in March. The course duration usually varies between 3 and 4 years.
