For the student, IDP was very helpful in preparing for competitions. “At IDP we have the Argumentation and Oratory Research Group, led by Professor Dr. Olívia Freitas, which guides us on how to construct good speeches. Furthermore, in the classroom we are constantly encouraged to think outside the box and seek more knowledge, which is very helpful. Study groups and IDP events are also important to me; with the vast portfolio of knowledge that the institution provides, I can not only construct good speeches but, above all, base my arguments on what will win a debate,” explains the student.
Already a familiar face in competitions, the student says that this type of challenge helps in his academic training. “Besides the excellent experiences that competitive debates offer me, I have much to gain as a future legal professional, especially in argumentation, logical reasoning, quick thinking for defending theses, and gaining experience in defending sides I don't always agree with. Furthermore, I also acquire the aptitude for oral defense, the ability to improvise, and the construction of speeches with connections between strong arguments—all these characteristics that will certainly make me and my fellow debaters in the IDP Debate Society better legal professionals,” concludes the student.
