Professor Danilo Porfírio, PhD in Social Sciences from IDP, will launch his book "American Foreign Policy and Jihadism" at IDP. The book discusses the role of the United States in the formation of religious political movements. The event will take place on Tuesday, February 19th.
The book historically addresses American foreign policy actions in the Middle East, primarily in the second half of the 20th century, and the connection between this American political action in the Middle East and the formation of religious political insurgency movements that use terror as a tactic, known as jihadist movements.
According to the author, Danilo Porfírio, the book's relevance lies in combating hate speech and can be divided into two parts. "The focus in the first part is to understand that American foreign policy represents a universalist attempt, a pretension, to bring to the world the values, principles, and precepts of the American way of life that they themselves call authentic modernity," explains the professor.
Secondly, the work shows the disastrous implementation of these values within the Middle East. “These disastrous actions, in some way, were instruments of symbolic violence against local Islamic communities, where their identity, culture, and way of life were treated as inferior. This was especially true during neocolonialism with Europeans and later with North Americans, following the rise of the US in the First and Second World Wars. Therefore, we will analyze Islam and how these terrorist movements emerged from Islam,” concludes the author.
