Next Wednesday and Thursday (June 6th and 7th), the international seminar "The data-driven economy: regulatory challenges for guaranteeing innovation and protecting personality" will be held in Brasília.

Organized by professors Laura Schertel Mendes and Danilo Doneda from the Brazilian Institute of Public Law (IDP), the event is promoted by the Center for Studies in Law, Internet and Society of the IDP (Cedis/IDP), the Group for Studies in Telecommunications Law of the University of Brasília (GETEL/UnB) and the Brazilian Institute of Civil Law (IBDCivil).

According to the organizers, the recent approval by the Chamber of Deputies of the bill on Data Protection confirms the urgency of a comprehensive approach to the effects of personal data processing in the Information Society. The topic in Brazil is not yet subject to specific regulation, but its regulatory contours are in the process of maturing.

The seminar will address issues such as the protection of privacy on the internet and the jurisprudence of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), as well as the European regulation on personal data and its impact on the Brazilian regulatory framework.

On the first day, the event will feature the presence of Minister Ricardo Villas-Bôas Cueva (STJ), professors Indra Spiecker genannt Döhmann and Astrid Wallrabenstein (University of Frankfurt, Germany), Ana Frazão (UnB), Bruno Gencarelli (European Union), Laura Schertel Mendes (UnB and IDP), Alexandre Sankievikz (IDP) and Carlos Oliveira (Minister of the Delegation of the European Union).

On its second day, a round table discussion will be held on the legislative landscape of personal data protection in Brazil, with the participation of the bill's rapporteur, Deputy Orlando Silva, Danilo Doneda (IDP), Fabrício Mota (Advisor to the Federal Senate), Cláudio Nazareno (Legislative Consultant in the Chamber of Deputies), Marcos Pinto (Civil House), Nathalie Gazzaneo (Facebook) and Bia Barbosa (Intervozes), moderated by Guilherme Pinheiro (IDP).
