What is the difference between male and female mayors regarding corruption in Brazil?
The gender of a politician can be associated with a greater or lesser perception of corruption. The close electoral races between men and women in Brazilian municipalities, along with federal audit reports on municipal administrations, allow for a comparison of the likelihood of corruption cases between male and female mayors. It was found that men are between 29 and 35 percentage points more likely to be involved in corruption cases than women. An analysis in another dimension, captured by the hiring of temporary staff in the last year of government, reveals that this practice is less common among women.
Are women less corrupt than men?
Political corruption is a widely researched topic in academic literature, and recently, researchers have shown interest in the differences between the public administration of men and women. Specifically, in order to ascertain whether female mayors commit fewer corrupt acts compared to male mayors, Brollo and Troiano (2016) analyzed the Brazilian municipal elections of 2000 and 2004 and concluded that male individuals tend to be elected and re-elected more frequently, in addition to committing more acts of political corruption, hiring more temporary staff, and receiving more funds from private donations for their campaigns.
